Knowledge Sharing Tools for Home-Based Employees

The pandemic and resulting quarantine from COVID-19 has forced us all to rethink how we could all work together without seeing our coworkers or being in the same office. Suddenly, we’re reevaluating how we spent our working time to make it the most efficient and least stressful that we can.

And that’s a good thing.

What many businesses are discovering is the importance of asynchronous, collaborative communication that allows their employees to be productive and operate on their own time. We’re also seeing more use of real-time chats like Slack or Microsoft Teams for quick responses.

All these tools obviously have their role and are super important in a virtual business environment where so many employees are working from home. However, what is missing from this is how we foster personal connections with coworkers. If we’re not seeing others, we’re losing one of the most important parts of work: the social element.

That’s why face-to-face communication is so important, and why video is such a powerful knowledge-sharing tool for home-based employees.

Simply put, video is the best way for two people to connect on a remote conversation, whether it’s one employee to another or a salesperson engaging with a prospect.

As we outlined on The Complete Guide to Enterprise Knowledge Sharing, “Video is such a powerful tool that simply no other medium can match. You can't see excitement, energy, or passion through text. It doesn't matter how many exclamation points you have.”

Of course, the shift to an increased reliance on video communication began long before the Coronavirus hit. However, what is new is that any other form of face-to-face communication is no longer safe and that we no longer have a choice.

We’re now spending way more time online and have become extreme users of live video conferencing, like Zoom, or asynchronous video communication, like EasyMovie. This has led to some awesome innovation from digital service providers and users alike.

And suddenly, we’re all acutely aware of the importance of a strong internet connection!

The great thing is, you don’t need to purchase a ton of equipment or tools in order to make this work. Your built-in camera and microphone on your device will work fine, and if you want to go a step further there are many affordable exterior microphone options available online.
